Camping Weekend

Hood Canal ImagesThis weekend we decided to camping with the kids to the Hood Canal.  It’s been a long time since I’ve gone, years…  To be frank I really wasn’t looking forward to it since I felt Owen was still a bit young.  It would be his first time sleeping out side of the crib except for daycare.   Laura decided it would be fun and set the plans in motion with Sophia.

We had a rough plan to get out of the house early on Saturday morning but we ended up leaving around noon instead.  To top things off it seems like everybody was in a bad mood.  It’s amazing how crazy things can get with the kids.  Before we left we tried to do some last minute cleaning, nobody likes to come home to a mess. While we were picking up the kids wanted to play at the same time.  Kids at play and clean are two things that don’t really mix well in our house.  Just as fast as we cleaned up a room Owen would pull it apart again.  Laura and I were going crazy.  After we got out of the house and packed the car with the kids, we were able to relax a bit.

The drive to Hood Canal was much faster than I anticipated, it only took about an hour and a half to get there… Pretty quick I thought.  As Washington state parks go the site was pretty nice.  You had your usual set of amenities, a coin operated shower, bathrooms with running water, a flat camping area, and they even had a play set for the kids!  Lucky for us when we arrived Sophia and Manish were already setup.  They had a Costco size tent that was able to fit both families.  All we had to do was fill up the air mattress, yes an air mattress.  It’s all about car camping these days.

Anyways, since it was a nice day we took the kids down to the water and check out the rest of the site.  The kids and Manish had a fantastic time in the water.  Owen really enjoyed digging in the dirt with his bucket.  He had a nice collection of rocks and Julia went out in the water and was able to get good and wet.  We were all quite surprised how warm the water was but also how shallow it was too. Manish was able to walk out a good 30 - 50 feet out and it was still only knee high.  Sophia also mentioned that early in the day the water was at a negative tide, meaning there was no water at all.  They were able to walk across the entire canal and not get wet.   It seems almost crazy to think about but we did notice how quick the tide was rolling in at the end of the day.  Soon it was time to head back and get ready for dinner and bed.

Over all I have to say camping with the kids was a good time.  We had one snag where Owen woke up around 1:30 AM thinking it was time to play.  Other than that everybody had a good time.  I’m looking forward to many more summer camping trips.
